Why is the cryptocurrency market so cold despite Bitcoin's price hovering around $80,000? Because Bitcoin's price no longer reflects the account balances of most retail investors. The core reason is that many people's main holdings aren't in Bitcoin, but in altcoins, which have already dropped 90% and could drop another 90%. Repeated crashes, unlocking, and losses from chasing trends not only erode confidence but also deplete their capital for further participation. Some people aren't unwilling to participate; they simply don't have the funds anymore. Those who remain aren't so easily swayed. Projects launch with fully diluted valuations of billions of dollars, their products and revenues yet to prove themselves, but their future prospects are already being sold to retail investors. New narratives lack innovation, old concepts are repackaged for new token launches, and memes have become a zero-sum game of speed and information asymmetry. After several rounds of exploitation, people are naturally unwilling to easily prop up the price again. Furthermore, funds have more options. Binance announced on October 15th that its tokenized US stock product, bStocks, had accumulated over $40 billion in trading volume and over $1 billion in assets under management. This doesn't directly prove that altcoin funds have all gone to US stocks, but it does indicate that US stock assets are vying for the same group of users' money and attention. When participating in US stocks is as easy as buying cryptocurrencies, why would crypto projects continue to get investors to pay for a story that hasn't yet materialized? Adding to this is macroeconomic uncertainty, making it even harder for funds to sustain high risk. The market isn't completely lacking in liquidity; rather, there isn't enough new capital willing to flow into altcoins, and limited funds are being dispersed among an increasing number of tokens. What the crypto market lacks isn't just a new narrative, but also the restoration of retail investors' principal, reasonable entry valuations, and genuine demand for sustainable returns. Issuing tokens and unlocking tokens without providing ordinary participants with a reason to profit and stay will make even the most exciting story unsustainable for the next round of market activity.
