According to LSEG shipping data, a tanker loaded with 40000 tons of Russian ultra-low sulfur diesel was loaded at the port of Primorsk on October 22, with an initial declared destination of New York and expected to arrive on November 7. But on October 23rd, the destination of the VesselFinder ship has been changed to FOR ORDERS, which means waiting for instructions, and the final unloading location has not been determined yet. If finally unloaded in the United States, this may be the first time since the US banned the import of Russian petroleum products in 2022 that Russian diesel will be reintroduced. 40000 tons of diesel is approximately 300000 barrels, which is not a significant amount for the entire United States. Moreover, diesel is a finished oil, and the excess supply directly affects the diesel itself. The situation on the crude oil side is different. The increase in diesel exports this time does not directly increase crude oil production. If Russian refineries resume processing, it may also increase demand for crude oil. Therefore, an increase in diesel supply does not necessarily mean a synchronous decline in crude oil prices. In terms of inflation, the role of a ship of diesel is very limited, and the real impact is continuous replenishment. If continuous supply can lower the wholesale price of diesel and further reduce the retail price of gas stations and fuel costs for truck transportation, agriculture, and factories, it may gradually be reflected in the prices of some commodities.
