The interview between Sun Yuchen and Jin Ming [Part 2] is here.
The biggest highlight of this issue is Sun Yuchen @ Justinsuntron's complete dismantling of his "life strategy": why he believes he is a hybrid of Buffett, Musk, and Trump.
All three of them are alumni of his University of Pennsylvania. According to Sun Yuchen, in the past, he was one of the "three giants of Peking University", but now some people joke that he has also been included and become one of the "four giants of Peking University".
So, what did he learn from each of the three individuals, and how did he combine the three different methods into his own path? The following are the core questions and answers from the interview.
one ️⃣ What have you learned from Buffett?
Sun Yuchen: Investment, risk control, and fundamentals.
My investment system as a whole has absorbed the methods of Buffett and Munger. But they mainly participate in traditional assets and are unwilling to enter many emerging fields; I am essentially taking Buffett's handbook and using it to compete with participants in new fields.
When I had lunch with Buffett, I suggested that he consider acquiring Tesla, which was still undervalued at the time, but this was not in line with his investment style.
Buffett told me that he would not heavily invest in a company that could bring huge surprises; If he could imagine this company appearing on the front page of the newspaper the next day, he wouldn't invest.
He doesn't like companies that are too disruptive and change too much, as it goes against his investment style and portfolio.
two ️⃣ What have you learned from Musk?
Sun Yuchen: High tech, high growth, and narrative.
Buffett's system places great emphasis on fundamentals, but there are also areas that cannot be covered, and Musk has just filled in this part.
The market of Buffett's era focuses more on investment return, price to earnings ratio, and how much money companies can return; After the high-tech revolution, the market is increasingly driven by technological narratives and values expectations more and more.
So in my opinion, Buffett and Musk are a "two wheel drive": Buffett solves fundamental problems, while Musk solves high growth and narrative problems.
My entrepreneurial path will follow Musk's methods, but it doesn't mean I have to do whatever he does. I may not necessarily enter the same industry as him.
three ️⃣ What have you learned from Trump?
Sun Yuchen: Personal brand, expression, and communication.
I have known about Trump for a long time. When I was in elementary school, I had already started watching "The Apprentice" hosted by him, and later I basically finished watching the entire program.
My English speaking skills were also trained with Trump's' The Apprentice '.
I started my business and entered the public eye around 2012, and had already gone through a long-term learning process before that. By the time they truly debuted, I had been observing these three alumni of the University of Pennsylvania for many years.
In terms of personal branding, promotion, and communication, I mainly learned from Trump, and of course, I also learned a part from Musk.
There is a 'law of mutual disregard' between Buffett, Musk, and Trump: Buffett emphasizes fundamentals and certainty, Musk values technological growth and storytelling, and Trump excels in personal branding and communication.
But as a latecomer, I can absorb all three of them: learning investment and risk management from Buffett, learning technology growth and narrative from Musk, learning personal branding and communication from Trump, and finally forming my own path.
four ️⃣ Would you fully identify with and replicate these three people?
Sun Yuchen: No, I think my understanding of "thin skin" and health even surpasses theirs.
Buffett, Trump, and Musk have not given enough priority to strength training. Trump and Buffett openly drink sugary cola, and Musk has also joked about Bryan Johnson's image after exercising on X.
They don't have 'thin muscles' themselves, so they may also belittle this matter.
But now I understand: exercise is not just for appearance or attracting the opposite sex, but to enable me to have a quality of life close to that of my 30s when I reach 80 years old, continue learning AI and communicating with Claude, instead of just sitting in a wheelchair.
