**[UK Government Debt Surpasses £3 Trillion for the First Time]**
Golden Finance reports that on October 21, the UK government’s borrowing in the first six months of the current fiscal year exceeded expectations, highlighting the constraints faced by Chancellor Healey ahead of his first budget announcement next week. From April to September this year, the UK’s fiscal deficit expanded to £97.8 billion (approximately $130 billion), £6 billion higher than the forecast made by the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) in March.
In September, UK government borrowing reached £24.5 billion, not only exceeding the OBR’s forecast but also surpassing the level seen during the same period last year. These figures represent the latest update on the state of public finances ahead of the UK government’s budget announcement on October 28. At that time, Healey must set the policy direction for Prime Minister Burnham’s new administration while avoiding panic in the bond market, as concerns grow over the high level of UK government debt.
The total UK government debt has surpassed £3 trillion for the first time. Although the UK economy has demonstrated strong resilience, capable of withstanding energy shocks triggered by the Middle East conflict, and tax revenues have exceeded the OBR’s forecasts, government borrowing for the 2025-2026 fiscal year to date remains higher than expected.
