[Study: Approximately One-Quarter of Global Data Centers Are Located in Water-Stressed Areas] According to a study published in *Environmental Science & Technology* by the American Chemical Society (ACS), researchers analyzed the locations of 9,347 operational data centers worldwide in relation to local water supply and demand conditions. They found that about 25% of data centers are located in areas experiencing water stress for at least one month per year, and approximately 6% are in regions facing water stress for most of the year. Under a scenario where the global average temperature rises by 3°C compared to 1900 levels, the proportion of data centers in water-stressed areas could increase to 33%. The study highlights that water used for cooling data centers is shared with surrounding cities, agriculture, and other sectors, emphasizing the need to consider local water resources and infrastructure conditions in long-term site selection and operational planning.
