South Korean Ministry of Finance and Economy and 5 Exchanges Symposium: No Clear Delay or Abolition of Virtual Asset Taxation
On October 20th, according to Yonhap News Agency, the South Korean Ministry of Finance and Economy has held a virtual asset taxation related symposium with five exchange operators including Dunamu, Bithumb, DigitalX, Coinone, and Streami, as well as the Korea Financial Commission, to discuss current taxation regulations, market environment, and tax preparation work, as well as to postpone or abolish taxation. However, no clear decision has been made on the relevant measures. It is reported that South Korea's virtual asset taxation policy was determined in 2020 and was originally scheduled to be implemented in 2022, but has since been postponed to 2023, 2025, and 2027. The South Korean National Tax Agency is currently preparing relevant regulations, but matters such as staking still need to be negotiated with the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs. If the regulations are announced next month, there will be only about two months left until the implementation of the plan.
