[South Korean Government Plans to Convene Five Major Crypto Exchanges on October 20 to Gather Opinions on 22% Crypto Tax Scheduled for 2027] Odaily Planet Daily News – The South Korean government plans to convene representatives from five major virtual asset exchanges—Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone, DigitalX, and Gopax—as well as executives from the Digital Asset Exchange Alliance (DAXA) on October 20 for a discussion regarding the virtual asset taxation policy set to be implemented in January 2027. The meeting aims to gather industry feedback. According to the current plan, South Korea will impose a 22% tax rate on income from the transfer and lending of virtual assets, after deducting a basic tax exemption of 2.5 million Korean won. This tax policy, proposed in 2020, has already been postponed three times. The government is still preparing to proceed according to the original timeline, with the South Korean National Tax Service expected to release related announcements in November. Additionally, South Korea's financial regulatory authorities are accelerating the drafting of the government's proposal for the 'Basic Law on Digital Assets,' which is expected to be completed and enter the consultation process by the end of this month.
