I'm fine with these kinds of services, but I think the relevant point is that IMO they are not increasing the "moneyness" of Bitcoin and other crypto assets. A middleman offering to convert BTC at point of sale to fiat is not increasing the demand on the part of merchants to receive Bitcoin payments as a business. They're not much different from a money changer in an airport, they're just doing it in the middle of a transaction. A service could monetize baseball cards the same way and it wouldn't necessarily make baseball cards money. Similarly when Bitcoin or Ethereum is used as an asset middleman for sovereign trade, which has occasionally been reported in recent years, what matters ultimately are the invoicing currency and final settlement currency. These tend to overwhelmingly be fiat. I've asked Square to provide data on how many merchants that allow Bitcoin POS payments are actually receiving BTC on the other end of the transaction, but they've not provided that afaik. That data would be informative for this convo. I doubt they will share it unless it is definitively positive of BTC as a currency as that is their messaging prerogative. As long as liabilities are denominated in fiat, businesses will overwhelmingly prefer fiat payments for their goods and services.
