[SEC Chairman Atkins Reaffirms Commitment to Comprehensive Crypto Regulation, Shifts Focus to Existing Authorities After CLARITY Act Fails]
Reported by Golden Finance, on October 19, according to U.Today, U.S. SEC Chairman Paul Atkins reiterated that despite legislative setbacks in Washington and leadership changes, the SEC remains dedicated to establishing a comprehensive regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies. Atkins stated on X that the SEC will "continue to push forward to provide the U.S. with a common-sense, comprehensive crypto market structure."
The backdrop is the failure of the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act (CLARITY Act) to pass the Senate on September 15—it did not clear the 60-vote procedural threshold. The act aimed to clarify the regulatory jurisdiction between the SEC and the CFTC. Following the act's failure, policy focus has shifted back to federal regulatory agencies utilizing existing authorities to provide clarity.
During Atkins' tenure, the SEC has been adjusting its approach to digital asset regulation: in September, it announced temporary regulatory exemptions to ease certain tokenized stock trading, while emphasizing the need for more rulemaking to build a sustainable framework. Additionally, Patrick Witt, Executive Director of the White House Crypto Committee, has stepped down, marking another leadership change in the White House's digital asset policy team. Witt was a key figure in the negotiations surrounding the CLARITY Act.
