Why have contract holdings decreased while BTC prices remain high?
BTC prices and contract holdings do not always rise or fall together.
From the graph, it can be seen that BTC prices significantly increased in late August, and the amount of open contracts (OI) also increased accordingly. But in late September, OI hit a temporary high and began to decline, while BTC prices did not experience the same level of decline.
Entering October, BTC prices remain relatively high, but OI has not returned to its previous peak.
This involves a very important indicator: Open Interest (OI, Open Interest).
It calculates the size of open contracts in the market, which can help us observe changes in positions in the contract market.
An increase in OI indicates an expansion in the size of open interest contracts, but it does not necessarily mean that the market is bullish, as every contract has both long and short positions.
Similarly, a decrease in OI is not necessarily a bad thing.
For example, after a round of gains, some traders may choose to close their positions for profit, or high leverage positions may be liquidated, which may lead to a decrease in OI.
If there is no significant decline in price, but OI continues to fall, it may indicate that the market is undergoing a round of position adjustment, and some leverage risks are also being released in this process.
However, the OI in the chart is priced in US dollars, and changes in the coin price itself can also affect its value, so we cannot fully understand the decrease in OI as an active liquidation.
That's also why to determine whether a market trend can continue, we can't just look at whether the price has broken through, but also observe the position structure of the contract market.
The price increase and synchronous increase in OI indicate that the contract position size is also expanding; An increase in price and a decrease in OI may indicate that some positions are being exited.
The market structure behind the two situations is not the same.
Afterwards, looking at the BTC market, you can observe OI and funding rates together, and then combine price changes to determine whether the market has accumulated too much leverage.
Price tells us where the market is going, while OI can help us understand how the contract positions behind this market are changing.
