[Judge Rejects Gemini and CFTC's Request to Void $5 Million Settlement Agreement]
According to a report by Jinse Finance, on October 16, a federal judge rejected a rare joint request from U.S. financial regulators and Gemini Trust Company. The request sought to overturn an enforcement decision made during the Biden administration, which required the cryptocurrency exchange, led by billionaire Winklevoss twins, to pay a $5 million fine.
Gemini and the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) had argued in May that the settlement agreement reached in January 2025 'violated the fundamental principles of fair enforcement.' The CFTC stated that an internal investigation revealed improper litigation practices in the case; it also argued that the case would not have been brought under the administration of President Donald Trump, who had a more favorable stance toward the crypto industry compared to his predecessor.
However, on Thursday, U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein in New York ruled that 'neither of these reasons is sufficient to justify voiding the settlement' and added that Gemini had voluntarily signed the settlement agreement three weeks before the trial. Attorneys representing Gemini and the CFTC did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
