There is a widely circulated saying in the wealthy circles of the United States called Buy, Borrow, Die: buy, borrow, leave to the next generation.
To put it simply, good assets are not for sale. When you need money, use it as collateral to borrow.
Musk has mortgaged Tesla's stock, and Ellison has mortgaged Oracle's stock. They are not short of money, they just don't want to sell. Once sold, taxes must be paid and the position is gone; If you borrow money, the stock is still there, and the future increase will still be your own.
This approach used to be far from ordinary people. Securities firms usually have thresholds for stock mortgage loans, and both the amount and interest rate need to be negotiated. Most people can only hold onto their stocks and wait for them to rise. If they need money, they can only sell them.
A while ago, Bitget launched rToken stock transfer, and my first reaction after reading it was to think of this logic.
Its approach is to transfer your US stocks in the brokerage directly to Bitget, and the system will automatically replace them with the corresponding rToken. The price follows the original stock, and dividends are paid as usual, only in the form of USDT.
After the stock is transferred, you can continue to hold it, or use it as collateral to borrow stablecoins, or directly use it as trading margin, with a maximum calculation of 95% of the market value. The stocks were not sold throughout the entire process.
Currently supporting over 3000 US stocks and ETFs, with free transfers and automatic completion of conversions. Some similar products only support a few dozen, which is a practical difference for people with diversified positions.
But I must clarify the other side. Rich people dare to borrow because their assets are thick enough to withstand fluctuations. Ordinary people using stocks as collateral to borrow money or as margin are essentially adding leverage. When the market crashes, the mortgaged stocks may be forcibly sold, which is completely opposite to the original intention.
There are a few more specific things: transferring $150 once, the transfer takes about 10 working days; I turned around and received rToken, not the type of stock found in securities firms. The custodian has also changed; How to determine taxation varies from person to person, it is best to ask the accountant before making large transactions.
The methods of the wealthy may not be suitable for everyone. Borrowing money is always a double-edged sword.
But at least, the option of 'using money without selling stocks' has begun to open up to ordinary investors.
