Modern-day Mission Impossible? Accused of hiding a listening device at OpenAI is Abdulrahman Alfozan, 35 years old, a Saudi national and U.S. permanent resident.
He joined OpenAI in July 2025 as an engineer on the product team.
According to disclosures from the Department of Justice and FBI, around September 28, he allegedly inserted a tiny recording device hidden in a roll of toilet paper into a USB port behind the TV in OpenAI's executive meeting room in San Francisco.
Just two days later, the device was discovered during a company counter-surveillance check.
Investigations revealed that he even used internal tools to look up meeting room schedules and executive locations. He also used his spouse's AI assistant account to ask about how to conduct covert continuous recordings, encrypt SD cards, and enable remote access.
He was ultimately arrested by the FBI, and OpenAI has since terminated his employment. The charge is using a device to intercept oral communications, which carries a maximum sentence of 5 years in prison.
