[ECB Governing Council Member: Need to Be Vigilant About Inflation Risks but Should Not Act Hastily]
Jin10 News, September 19 – ECB Governing Council member Yannis Stournaras stated that the European Central Bank must remain vigilant about the risks of rising inflation but should not act hastily. He noted that there is currently no evidence of second-round effects through channels such as wages, but it cannot be taken for granted that this situation will persist.
'We are witnessing a series of persistent supply-side shocks, and these factors cannot simply be ignored. At the same time, strong demand factors are also present due to fiscal expansion and the investment boom in artificial intelligence. We must remain alert.'
With more than a month until the next policy decision, Stournaras said he has not yet made a decision, and the various economic outlook forecasts prepared by the ECB may provide guidance. 'If there is a surge in inflation in September, or if rising energy costs clearly push us into an adverse scenario, then a rate hike in October cannot be ruled out. But if there are some uncertainties, we will not take any action and will instead wait for the next round of forecasts.'
Stournaras emphasized that this week's Federal Reserve rate hike also benefits the ECB. 'The Fed's rate decision enhances its credibility and also strengthens the credibility of global monetary policy, as the Fed and the U.S. dollar play a central role.'
