According to Wu Blockchain, the on-chain asset recovery organization DART disclosed that during the theft crisis caused by an entropy vulnerability in the firmware of the hardware wallet manufacturer Coinkite's ColdCard, DART, in collaboration with independent white-hat security researchers, successfully rescued and transferred slightly more than 50 BTC from at-risk addresses ahead of the hackers.
Previous reports indicated that due to historical firmware errors leading to severely insufficient entropy in mnemonic generation, hackers had already stolen over 1,500 BTC (losses exceeding $100 million) through offline brute-force attacks.
To ensure the lawful and compliant return of the rescued funds, the recovered BTC has not been stored in personal wallets but instead deposited into the "Crypto Recovery Trust," established by national security attorneys at the law firm Steptoe & Johnson. Through rigorous legal procedures such as on-chain fund tracing, sanctions screening, and ownership verification, the funds will be lawfully returned to the rightful victims.
