"Watched the AAOI earnings call and one point really stood out: the management mentioned that if the U.S. truly bans Chinese optical modules, they actually wouldn’t be able to take on large orders because their current production capacity is already sold out through Q2 of 2027. The first question came from Wolfe Research analyst George Notter, who directly asked: Recent news suggests the U.S. might ban Chinese optical modules from entering the country. What does this mean for AAOI? Will it change your capacity planning? Will it alter conversations with customers? CFO Stefan Murry gave a measured response: The reports are still speculative, the ban hasn’t been implemented, and the details aren’t out yet, so "it’s a bit early to say." But he did provide a clear positioning—AAOI’s U.S.-based manufacturing setup has always been, and likely will continue to be, the most important draw for customers. This news obviously amplifies that appeal. Currently, the company is—and is expected to remain—the largest U.S.-based manufacturer of AI optical modules. CEO Thompson Lin’s follow-up was much more assertive: "I don’t think this even counts as news. This kind of discussion has been ongoing for quite some time." Because of this, the company has been negotiating long-term agreements with three customers. "We might be the only company truly committed to investing heavily in U.S. manufacturing—not just for lasers, but also for optical modules." Early customer feedback indicates that clients are likely to allocate more aggressively to AAOI, especially for U.S.-made products. Thompson further added: "Our production capacity is fully booked from now through Q2 of next year. The best thing we can do is ramp up capacity more aggressively, potentially starting in Q3 next year, particularly for U.S.-made products." This means that if the U.S. does decide to target Chinese optical modules, AAOI—currently and expected to remain the largest U.S.-based manufacturer of AI optical modules—won’t be able to take on additional orders for the next three quarters. #AAOI
