[SpaceX Rents Out Colossus 1 Computing Power to Anthropic After Facing Technical Issues]
According to a report by Jinse Finance on June 13, citing foreign media, insiders revealed that SpaceX (SPCX.O) decided to rent out the full capacity of its Memphis-based Colossus 1 data center to Anthropic after encountering technical challenges while using it to develop and operate the Grok artificial intelligence model. The company had originally planned to leverage a cluster of three data center campuses to train its cutting-edge AI models with massive computing power. However, it faced latency issues when attempting to connect Colossus 1 with two other sites located more than 10 miles apart, a problem exacerbated by aging network infrastructure.
In addition to the latency issues, efforts to integrate Colossus 1 with other facilities were also hindered by hardware differences. The facility is equipped with multiple generations of NVIDIA chips, including Hopper and Blackwell, as well as some older accelerators. Meanwhile, Colossus 2 and Colossus 3 are more uniformly built around NVIDIA Blackwell chips.
