[Signal States It May Exit the Canadian Market If Bill C-22 Is Enacted] Deep Tide TechFlow reports that on May 15, according to Cointelegraph, the privacy-focused communication app Signal stated that if required to comply with Canada's proposed lawful access legislation, Bill C-22, the company might exit the Canadian market. Signal's Vice President of Strategy and Global Affairs, Udbhav Tiwari, said the bill could force service providers to establish technical surveillance capabilities and retain certain user metadata for up to one year, which may weaken end-to-end encryption and increase the risk of cyberattacks. According to the report, Bill C-22 has not yet been formally enacted and still requires parliamentary review and royal assent procedures. In addition to Signal, VPN service provider Windscribe also stated that it might follow suit and exit Canada if the bill is passed.
