[Signal Hints at Possible Exit from Canada Due to the 'Lawful Access Act']
According to Cointelegraph, the privacy-focused messaging app Signal has stated that it may exit the Canadian market if it is forced to comply with the proposed C-22 bill ('Lawful Access Act'). The bill requires electronic service providers to establish technical surveillance capabilities and retain certain user metadata for up to one year to assist law enforcement in investigating crimes such as terrorism and child exploitation. Signal's Vice President of Strategy and Global Affairs, Udbhav Tiwari, stated that the bill could threaten end-to-end encryption, making private communication services vulnerable to cyberattacks. The company would 'rather leave Canada' than compromise on its commitment to user privacy. VPN service provider Windscribe also indicated that it would follow suit if C-22 is passed, as VPNs would almost certainly be required to log user identity data.
