The U.S. envoy condemns Iran's collective punishment practices, prompting a UN draft resolution to focus on issues of mines and tolls in the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz, stated that Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz violates fundamental maritime laws and international law. Waltz condemned reports that Iran is establishing a Persian Gulf Strait Authority to impose tolls on ships passing through the waterway, calling the dispersal of sailors in the strait 'a calculated act of coercion.' 'Imposing collective punishment on the entire world to try to resolve some kind of dispute is unacceptable, immoral, and illegal under international law,' he said. Additionally, the U.S. is working with Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE to draft a new UN Security Council resolution demanding that Iran cease attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and stop attempts to impose tolls.
