[OpenAI CEO Apologizes for Failing to Report Mass Shooting Suspect, Admits Security Process Flaws]
According to Golden Finance, on April 25, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently sent a letter to the town of Tumbler Ridge, Canada, formally apologizing for failing to promptly notify police about activity records related to a mass shooting suspect. This tragedy occurred in February of this year, resulting in 8 deaths. The suspect was 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar.
The report noted that OpenAI's automated review system had flagged Van Rootselaar's ChatGPT account in June 2025 due to information involving descriptions of violent scenarios, leading the company to immediately ban the account. Some employees viewed the content as a potential warning of real-world violence and urged leadership to contact Canadian law enforcement. However, the company's senior management ultimately decided not to report the matter to authorities, a decision that sparked significant controversy after the tragedy occurred.
In the letter dated April 23, Altman expressed his deepest condolences and apologized for the company's failure to take action sooner. (Dongxin News Agency)
