Maduro appears in court again without speaking, losing 26 pounds, Trump hints he may face more charges
BlockBeats News: On March 27th, Venezuelan President Maduro appeared in the United States Southern District Court for the Southern District of New York on March 26th. At the court hearing, Maduro and his wife remained silent throughout, only sitting in the defendant's seat to hear, record, and communicate with their lawyers. The court arranged for journalists to watch through closed-circuit television, with limited viewing angles. According to media reports, Maduro has lost about 13 kilograms since early January and is currently being held at the Brooklyn Metropolitan Detention Center in New York. The detention center is notorious, like a 'purgatory on earth', where Maduro and his wife cannot meet or communicate directly. For many years, lawyers have claimed that those detained here consume "expired, undercooked, and contaminated food," including "spoiled meat and dairy products.
The focus of the trial is on the issue of paying lawyer fees. The defense team pointed out that the US Treasury Department briefly allowed the Venezuelan government to pay for legal fees, but later modified the permit, claiming it violated the Sixth Amendment of the US Constitution and procedural justice, and demanded that the case be withdrawn or the lawyer be allowed to withdraw. The prosecutor's response stated that it involves national security and foreign policy, does not allow the government to pay fees, and has not provided any other relief options. 92 year old presiding judge Hulestan stated that he will not dismiss the case and questioned whether the defendant currently poses a threat to US national security, calling the case "unique and unusual". If the defense lawyer withdraws, the US government or designated lawyer will represent them.
Outside the court, multiple people supported Maduro, calling him the legitimate president, calling for the release of the Maduro couple, and criticizing the United States for wasting taxes and illegally interfering. Former US President Trump hinted that Maduro may face more charges. (Daily Economic News)
