The more AI can write, the more technology companies lack people who can write. When ChatGPT first became popular, many people were worried that their copywriting jobs would be ruined. But now, the answer given by Silicon Valley is that people who can write and tell stories are actually more valuable.
In early 2026, Netflix announced a position as Director of Product and Technology Communications with an annual salary cap of $775000;
Anthropic's communication team expanded to 80 people last year and is still recruiting, with an annual salary starting at $200000;
OpenAI has several communication positions with salaries of over $400000.
The average annual salary of a communication director in a typical American company is only $106000.
What does this mean?
Due to the overwhelming amount of content generated by AI in bulk, information noise has overshadowed the brand's own voice, and those who can truly explain things clearly and get to the point have become scarce resources.
There is too much junk information, and companies are willing to pay a high price to hire someone who claims to be able to penetrate noise. The term 'penetrating noise' repeatedly appears in job postings in the tech industry from late 2025 to early 2026. No company is willing to admit that the content they produce is also a part of the noise, but everyone is afraid that their voice will be drowned out. So everyone competed to raise prices, as if whoever paid more money would get more user attention.
AI makes writing too cheap, but instead makes good writing expensive again. Mass production of garbage is rampant, and those who truly know how to think and polish words are starting to gain a premium.
If it's just code words, AI is already sufficient. The 'storytellers' that companies spend a lot of money on do far more than just writing words:
1) In the storytelling team of Google Cloud, what they need to write is customer cases, such as "How Home Retailer Lowe uses Google Cloud's Vertex AI to create interactive shopping experiences".
2) In Microsoft's security department, they are looking for a senior director who combines network security technology experts, communicators, and marketers. At Vanta, a compliance technology company, the annual salary for this position has increased to $274000.
3) USAA is a military financial services company that has hired its fourth dedicated storyteller in less than a year. Tara Ford Payne, Vice President of Communications and Public Affairs of the company, emphasized that this is not a recruitment document.
The supply of information has long been surplus. The real challenge is: how do you create content that others are willing to spend time watching and allocate attention to?
The core is still what we talked about before: unique perspectives, interesting charm. Furthermore, good stories are used to let others know who you are, what you believe in, and whether you deserve respect.
In the midst of noise, having a loud voice is useless, someone really needs to be able to speak clearly.
Media is another manifestation of power. https://(x.com)/qinba frank/status/2005261848325812435? s=46&t=k6rimWsEbo2D2tXolYcM-A
