Minister Daryl Vaz has given an update on recovery efforts after Hurricane Melissa, focusing on transport, connectivity, and electricity.
The Rural School Bus Programme remains fully operational with 82 buses islandwide. From February 1, the service will be cashless. Students must have a Student Transportation Card loaded with the $50 fare to use the buses.
On connectivity, the Universal Service Fund has installed 22 Starlink units across seven parishes, with more to be added by the end of January. Community Wi-Fi sites are also being restored, especially in rural areas.
For telecommunications, Flow has restored most mobile and fixed services, and Digicel has restored the majority of its mobile network.
On electricity, 93% of power has been restored. About 51,000 customers are still without light. Around 30,000 are expected to be reconnected by the end of January or early February, while others need repairs before power can return. Power restoration in parts of Westmoreland is expected to start this week.
The Government has provided major financial support to speed up restoration and has also allocated $1 billion to rewire and repair over 2,600 homes at no cost under the National Energy Poverty Reduction Programme.
The Government remains committed to clear updates, transparency, and completing restoration as quickly as possible.(Andrew Holness)
