Never in human history have people had so much information at their fingertips. Yet, despite all this access, misinformation and ignorance are still high. That is the challenge of our time.
As Prime Minister, I believe government must not fear technology, we must guide and manage it properly. Tools like AI are powerful and widely available, but they must be used responsibly. There are issues of fairness, bias, access and misuse, and government has a duty to act as the referee to protect our people.
I believe in technology. It is created by the human mind, and it must be used to improve our lives.
For too long, simple government services have required Jamaicans to stand in long lines. Take motor vehicle registration, there is no strong reason it must always be done in person. Many services can be completed online, saving time and money. In fact, hundreds of government services are already digitized and available.
But two challenges remain: access and fear. Not every Jamaican has reliable internet, and some people feel safer holding physical documents instead of using digital systems.
That is why we are investing in stronger digital infrastructure, including a new subsea cable to deliver faster, more reliable and more affordable internet across Jamaica. If we are serious about modernizing government, we must move services online and ensure every Jamaican can access them.(Andrew Holness)
