Recently, Apple launched a foldable phone.
Although many people online have complained that this phone lacks technological innovation, its highlights in user experience have received widespread acclaim, such as the crease being hardly visible, split-screen display of different content, and the interface being redesigned to shift specific icons to the right.
However, some features have received special attention, such as:
The phone displaying a lens effect when folded.
But soon, there were rumors online (of uncertain truth) that a user had achieved a similar effect on Samsung's foldable phone, using this to prove that implementing these technologies is not very difficult.
Regardless of whether this rumor is true or false, I believe other phone manufacturers will soon imitate and realize these features from Apple. For ordinary products, the purely technical barriers will quickly be overcome, making it hard for a company to have a long-lasting moat.
But Apple's uniqueness lies here: even if the technology is not difficult, other phone manufacturers cannot release these functions and features before Apple.
This is what impresses me about Apple: the effort they put into user experience, the energy they are willing to invest, and their serious attitude are unmatched among existing phone manufacturers.
Some news reveals that Apple has been developing this foldable screen design for six years, and even after Cook's departure, not a single detail of its implementation was leaked.
This extreme pursuit of user experience is also what Duan Yongping repeatedly mentioned and emphasized as Apple's moat in his investment Q&A, and it is also the reason he has long believed in Apple's strong profitability.
Although Apple is not the first company to launch a foldable phone, once this phone is on the market, I believe Apple will again become the benchmark and example for foldable phones.
Interestingly, Duan Yongping once believed that Apple would not launch a foldable phone because he thought such products might only cater to a niche market.
But from the current popularity (especially in pre-orders), the demand for this product may not be small. After this phone is launched, it may allow Apple to profit for several more years, and it remains the highly profitable company it has always been.
Looking back, since Jobs took over Apple again and launched the iPhone, it has been 20 years, and Apple has consistently made such profits, which is quite rare among consumer goods companies.
This also makes me recall Duan Yongping's past discussions about Apple in the Q&A: from when he bought Apple in 2011 to now, it has been 15 years, and his comments year after year have remained unchanged, while Apple's development has progressed year after year as he anticipated.
This ability to "understand the company" and "predict the company" over a decade ago is indeed quite rare.
It's been two years since I looked at his investment Q&A, but I have never bought Apple or any shares, as I always felt that Apple's price might be too high. I have always doubted whether Apple can continue to make money in the future.
I remember seeing a message last year saying that Duan Yongping was still buying Apple last year or the year before. I was quite surprised at the time: still buying at this price, did he have such high hopes for Apple's future profitability?
Now, it seems that despite various voices claiming that Apple is falling behind in the AI era, at least from an investment perspective, for the next several years, Apple will still be a very profitable company that can provide good returns to shareholders.
Just recently, some netizens asked Duan Yongping if it would be too late to buy AI stocks now.
Duan Yongping replied (in essence):
Then wouldn't he be buying Apple even later? Because Apple went public in 1980, and he only started buying in 2011.
Duan Yongping's point is very clear:
The judgment of whether it is late to buy a company's stock should not be based on past prices, but on the future. Whether it can still make money in the future is what matters. As long as it can still generate profits in the future, the current price, relative to its future earning potential, is still cheap, so buying now is still not too late.
