Key Takeaways

  • Brazil’s central bank created a real-time alert system with Hypernative to prevent crypto cyberattacks.
  • The tool responds to a July 2025 exploit where cybercriminals stole $180M and cashed out using crypto.
  • Major exchanges like Mercado Bitcoin will integrate the alerts within weeks to maintain fund traceability.

As crypto rises in popularity in Brazil, criminals have been increasingly using the cryptocurrency system for illicit purposes, but institutions are taking action to prevent this from happening.

The Central Bank of Brazil is preparing a system that would alert a joint group of exchanges and banking institutions to threats involving cryptocurrency assets. According to Valor Economico, the system was built in partnership with Hypernative, a company that seeks to neutralize digital assets threats before they materialize, and has already been tested with unreported market participants.

Regina Pedroso, executive director of the Brazilian Tokenization Association (ABToken), stressed that the system would begin integration during the next two weeks, with entities receiving and redistributing these alerts.

The discussion around this tool surged last year, when the central bank formed a working group against cyberattacks. Pedroso stressed that the main concern in these incidents would be maintaining traceability of the funds when they exit traditional finance rails and enter the crypto sector.

In July 2025, the Central Bank of Brazil faced an attack of this kind when cybercriminals exploited a vulnerability in the software of C&M, a middleware company, and syphoned $180 million from the financial system, cashing out part of the funds using bitcoin and USDT via exchanges.

At the time, Rocelo Lopes, CEO of Smartpay, criticized the lack of guardrails to mitigate damages caused by the exploit.

“The challenge now is to implement the tool. It has already been tested by the Central Bank, some bulletins have already been issued, and now associations have to adapt to receive and distribute the alert,” Pedroso concluded.

Foxbit and Mercado Bitcoin, two national crypto institutions, would be part of the group of companies implementing this alert system.
