The cryptocurrency industry’s resilience in the face of intense governmental pressure has unexpectedly become its strongest lobbying asset, according to Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) co-founder Marc Andreessen.

During his recent appearance on the "a16z Crypto Show," the legendary venture capitalist revealed that years of regulatory hostility have inadvertently proven the industry's durability to skeptical lawmakers in Washington.

"We had an administration in the White House that absolutely decided to kill the industry," Andreessen explained, noting that they "flat-out declared war, specifically declined to regulate, refused to regulate, and instead decided to prosecute."

Despite this, the technology and the industry surrounding it survived, which has led to a bizarre turning point on Capitol Hill.

"I've had these conversations with some lawmakers in D.C. where they say, 'I'm gonna support crypto now because if it didn't die during this whole period when we tried to kill it, then it must be good,'" Andreessen noted. "Which is the most reverse logic way I can think of to end up positive on something, but I guess I'll take it."

The need for clarity act

Andreessen finds humor in this political pivot, but he emphasized that the United States urgently needs a comprehensive legislative framework, such as the Clarity Act currently working its way through the Senate.

Without proper rules, he warned, bad actors are allowed to thrive offshore while compliant domestic companies face a disadvantage.

"We need a stable, permanent regulatory structure for crypto in the U.S. the same way we have for stocks and bonds and everything else," Andreessen said.

He pointed directly to the collapse of offshore exchange FTX as the prime example of what happens without a domestic regulatory perimeter.

"We need it so that it doesn't result in what FTX is. We need it so that people's money doesn't get stolen. And we need it so that the winners of the market aren't fly-by-night operations operating on yachts off some coast somewhere," he stated. "We're not looking for a free lunch, we're not looking for subsidies, we're not looking for protectionism... we're just looking for a permanent framework that lets people do business in a responsible way."

Pushing back on the "illicit finance" narrative

Andreessen also pushed back heavily against critics, such as Senator Elizabeth Warren.

"The national security people I talked to typically don't agree with that," Andreessen revealed. "In fact, they typically say something quite different, which is, ironically, they're hoping that more criminals and terrorists use crypto and use blockchains because there's a trail."
