My suggestion is: Do not enable cloud sync for Google 2FA, but keep the offline recovery capability.

Especially with exchange accounts where you have significant funds, a Google account can easily become a major entry point!

If you have already enabled it, in addition to turning off cloud sync, you need to unbind and rebind 2FA for all important platforms once. Because if the old keys have ever been uploaded to the cloud, you cannot confirm whether they have been exposed.

Now, without enabling cloud sync, how can we avoid losing the phone?

1⃣ Prepare a backup phone specifically as a verification device.

Buy a cheap iPhone / Android device, do not insert a SIM card, do not install Telegram, do not browse Twitter, do not click links.

How to operate:

1) Enable automatic time calibration on both the main phone and the backup phone.

2) When re-binding 2FA on the exchange, both phones scan the same original QR code simultaneously or enter the key to complete the binding.

3) Confirm that the 6-digit verification codes generated by both phones are the same.

4) Test whether the verification codes from both phones can log in successfully.

5) Turn off the backup phone and keep it in a safe or drawer at home to prevent loss; open it once every six months to calibrate the time.

2⃣ Save the key provided by the platform offline.

When binding 2FA, the QR code is not easy to save, and the generated garbled text:

Write it down by hand, save it offline like a mnemonic phrase, so that if the phone is lost, you can restore 2FA on a new device without affecting the login.
