Recently, there have been many conferences in the crypto industry and increased travel demands. Carl Agnelli, Head of Security at a16z crypto and former U.S. Secret Service agent, has specially compiled a personal safety operational guide for every Web3 practitioner on the go.
Step 1: Establish the Right Security Awareness
- Always be clear about what constitutes a "normal state" and remain vigilant to any abnormal behavior.
- Distance is safety. Rather than confronting, it is better to maintain distance: if you spot suspicious behavior, leave immediately or change locations.
- Trust your instincts when something feels off.
- Take some time to think about "What if... what should I do?" scenarios.
- Develop small safety habits now to avoid chaos after an incident occurs.
Step 2: Stay Focused in Public
- Maintain a relaxed but alert state, do not be overly tense, just pay attention to your surroundings.
- Keep your head up while walking or traveling, and don't wear headphones on one ear to avoid being completely immersed in your phone.
- Periodically change your daily routes, such as your commute, gym schedule, and locations for coffee and lunch.
- Avoid discussing sensitive itineraries loudly in public areas or rideshares.
Step 3: During Outings (Daytime or Nighttime)
- Walk with purpose, avoid showing confusion or hesitation.
- When drinking or going out late at night, never walk home alone; share your itinerary and location with a trusted person.
- Carry a flashlight or pepper spray with you, and have it ready in your hand when walking alone at night.
- Never discuss your crypto holdings with strangers or in public settings.
- Set a meeting point with friends or colleagues in case you get separated.
- Do not post real-time location updates.
Step 4: Make Travel and Hotel Stays Safer
- Maintain a "low-key presence" while traveling, blend into the environment, and avoid showing wealth.
- Do not share travel plans in advance or disclose your current location.
- Make it a habit to familiarize yourself with evacuation routes and stairwell locations each time you check into a hotel.
- Keep shoes and a few essentials within easy reach to create a simple emergency kit.
- Be aware of any anomalies in your room and trust your intuition.
- Use the hotel safe and place some items you will need in the morning (like a shoe) inside, so you don't forget your valuables.
Step 5: Additional Caution for High-Risk Personnel
- Crypto industry practitioners can set up a bait wallet with transaction records to use as a countermeasure in case of coercion.
- Avoid wearing clothing with company logos in public.
- Reduce your digital footprint: consider using information clearing services and opt out of public property databases.
- Upgrade home security, install cameras or motion lights, especially near entry points.
- Avoid concentrating all assets or identity information in a single account or device; manage them in a decentralized manner.
- Practice noticing exits and cover in public spaces to make it an instinctive reaction.
- Use a PO box or office address instead of your home address; when possible, buy property under an LLC name instead of a personal name.
Step 6: Maintain Safety Habits
- Keep a low-profile public image.
- Avoid publicly sharing family photos.
- Regularly check home security: sensors, cameras, locks, lights.
- Conduct a quick "what-if scenario" drill once a month to stay alert.
- Regularly update digital security settings, including bait wallets.
