Yesterday I saw this news on Sina (the gist is):

Iran requires tankers passing through the Strait of Hormuz to pay tolls in cryptocurrency.

Upon seeing this news, my first reaction was that this cryptocurrency is unlikely to be stablecoins like USDC, USDT, etc. Then, I became curious: why doesn’t the news specify which cryptocurrency?

Then I looked at the details of the news, which stated that no specific cryptocurrency was designated for payment.

But later I checked foreign websites, and they showed that Iran requires payment in Bitcoin.

Why did I first feel that it was unlikely to be these stablecoins?

The reason is simple:

Because they are essentially centralized assets and are tightly controlled by the U.S. government. For a hostile party caught in fierce political disputes, if they use such assets, once their accounts are blocked by these stablecoin issuers, Iran would be left helpless.

The value of freedom and anti-censorship at this moment, in such a significant historical conflict, is incredibly important and precious. It not only signifies an ultimate invisible value for Iran but for all groups and individuals.

And assets like Bitcoin, which are censorship-resistant, need significant historical events and intense conflicts that change the course of history to build and showcase such value and make the world recognize it.

The historical weight of gold has accumulated over time in this way; obviously, crypto assets are also staging such a history.

I have always held the view:

The most valuable things must be usable and trusted by both angels and demons.

It's like the air we rely on every moment—the Creator provides us with this substance without distinguishing who is qualified to breathe it, and does not strip away a person's right to breathe air just because they are a demon or have committed grave sins.

As for whether there are other ways to prevent demons and the most sinful people from breathing air, that is a human matter to handle, and the Creator should strive to remain neutral.

Only by transcending such disputes can the creations of the Creator be recognized by all humanity.

The top-tier crypto assets should stand in the Creator's vision and should not presuppose human values and orientations.

I recalled the FOCIL mechanism of Ethereum that I read about recently.

In real-world scenarios, we inevitably encounter situations like this:

Some nodes, for whatever reason, in order to please regulators, will block certain accounts and censor some transactions based on the regulators' requests.

This is what we often hear referred to as the “blacklist” mechanism.

To eliminate such situations, Ethereum's FOCIL mechanism established a “jury” of 17 nodes. These 17 nodes are randomly selected from the entire network. Each node contains a list of transactions that must be included in a block. If the block producer packages a block that lacks any transaction from the transaction lists of these 17 nodes, the block it produces will be deemed illegal by the entire network and discarded.

With the FOCIL mechanism in place, unless regulators can enforce their oversight across all nodes in the network, it will be difficult for them to interfere with Ethereum’s neutrality through transaction censorship.

Regarding the FOCIL mechanism, Vitalik also mentioned the future plan to further strengthen this mechanism, solidifying Ethereum's anti-censorship characteristics to achieve as much neutrality as possible.
