My ketogenic journey:
In September 2018, I was diagnosed with diabetes (actually considered pre-diabetes). The doctor immediately wanted to give me insulin, but I said I wanted to "try to save it a bit longer," so I didn’t inject insulin and opted for medication, Metformin, but as soon as I took it, I experienced hypoglycemia;
At the end of the month, I went to Beijing for a conference and met an old brother from Northeast China. He saw that I wasn't drinking and looked gloomy, so he asked what was wrong. I explained the situation, and he laughed heartily and said: "Don't listen to those quacks, quickly stop taking the medication. Just avoid staple foods; it will be tough at first. During the National Day holiday, trust me, don't eat meals; just drink coffee with a bit of sea salt and coconut oil every day. If you are really starving, eat two boiled eggs.”
I of course believed him. During the holiday, I didn't eat for 6 days; my weight at the time was 95 kilograms, and after 6 days, it dropped to 88 kilograms. Then I started eating once a day, specifically:
- A cup of coffee brewed with a high-pressure moka pot by my wife, with sea salt and a few drops of coconut oil as soon as I woke up, then I wouldn’t eat anything for the rest of the day, just drinking lemon water;
- Dinner was either 200 grams or 400 grams of steak; if it was 200 grams, I'd add 4 eggs. My wife would fry half a carrot and half an onion in beef tallow for me, and basically, I’d eat a whole head of garlic at every meal, without any vegetables. Sometimes, I’d get tired of steak and would switch to 500 grams of salmon;
- From then on, I stopped drinking any beverages and didn't touch anything sugary. Due to sleep issues, I would have some liquor or red wine, but not domestic alcohol.
I quickly entered a ketogenic state. At that time, I still had to go to the office. One morning, a colleague saw me and asked why I was drinking alcohol so early. I said I wasn’t, but he replied that I smelled like red wine. I knew this was due to high ketone levels and drank more water along with a set of vitamins and trace elements, and soon returned to normal;
At that time, I was also jogging 3 kilometers daily (still slower than my wife's brisk walking speed), and my weight quickly dropped down to a minimum of 76 kilograms. The loss was substantial; all my old clothes, especially pants, could no longer be worn; even if I stuffed two bottles of beer in my pants, they still felt loose;
Later, I learned that running isn’t good at my age, and I shouldn’t be too thin, so I stopped running, stabilizing my weight at around 82-83 kilograms;
Seven years have passed in the blink of an eye. Now my blood sugar is normal, blood pressure is slightly high (diastolic pressure is high, but returns to normal once I rest; trading cryptocurrency does that), and after going keto, my mind is exceptionally clear, my reactions are very quick, I feel alert and sharp, my strength has increased, though my endurance seems a bit lacking (possibly due to age), and I no longer experience the various discomforts I used to!
