Breez SDK now enables developers to offer biometric passkey logins, replacing manual seed phrase management for bitcoin self-custody.
Breez CEO Roy Sheinfeld announced the integration of Passkey Login into the Breez Software Development Kit (SDK) on March 18, 2026. This update utilizes the WebAuthn Level 3 PRF extension to deterministically derive cryptographic keys directly from a user’s device. The system allows users to reconstruct wallet keys on demand via biometrics, removing the need for physical backups like paper seed phrases.
The technology is currently supported on Android and Apple’s iOS 18 or macOS 15, while leveraging the Nostr protocol to manage wallet labels without centralized servers. Over a billion people have already activated passkeys globally, and Breez aims to tap into this existing infrastructure to simplify Bitcoin onboarding. Developers can now implement this “seedless” experience while maintaining the option for users to export traditional mnemonics if needed.
“Passkey Login builds on authentication infrastructure that billions of people already use every day, and it makes using bitcoin feel as natural as unlocking your phone,” stated Roy Sheinfeld.
🧭 FAQs
• Which platforms currently support the new Breez SDK passkey login? It works on Android and Apple devices running iOS 18 or macOS 15.
• How does the system remember specific wallet labels during restoration? The app retrieves labels from Nostr relays using an identity derived from the passkey.
• Can users still access their funds if they switch platforms? Users can export a standard mnemonic seed phrase to maintain cross-platform wallet interoperability.
• Is a local backup file required for this security model? No local secrets or encrypted backup files are stored since keys derive fresh every use.
