Trump has used the threat of tariffs against Canada, one of the U.S.’s largest commercial partners, again.

On Saturday, Trump threatened Canada with 100% tariffs on all Canadian goods entering the country if it completes a trade deal with China, stressing that he would not allow the neighboring nation to become a “drop-off port” for Chinese goods to reach U.S. soil.

He stated:

“If Canada makes a deal with China, it will immediately be hit with a 100% Tariff against all Canadian goods and products coming into the U.S.A. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

Trump highlighted that China would “eat Canada alive,” destroying their “businesses, social fabric, and general way of life.” In a subsequent post, Trump stressed that “the last thing the World needs is to have China take over Canada. It’s NOT going to happen, or even come close to happening!”

Trump’s threats come after Canada’s Prime Minister Mike Carney reached a series of trade agreements with China, including a tariff reduction for Chinese EVs, allowing up to 49,000 vehicles to enter the North American nation. Canada also reached better tariffs for its agricultural exports to China.

The president’s stance on this issue directly opposed what he had stated when being asked about this trade deal on January 16th. When he was asked about the situation, he declared:

That’s OK. That’s what he should be doing. I mean, it’s a good thing for him to sign a trade deal. If you can get a deal with China, you should do that.

Carney countered with a video pushing the government’s “buy Canadian” policy, explaining that Canada decided to invest in national alternatives to foreign products and technology.

While he acknowledged that the Canadian economy was under threat from abroad, Carney said:

We can’t control what other nations do. We can be our own best customer. And together, we will build Canada strong.
