Crypto exchange Coinbase (Nasdaq: COIN) detailed strong momentum across its markets business, pointing to expanding scale, deeper liquidity, and rapid product innovation across spot and derivatives platforms. The publicly traded company outlined Coinbase Markets’ performance on Jan. 9, 2026, emphasizing global reach, infrastructure upgrades, and growing institutional participation.

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong shared on social media platform X on Jan. 10:

We’re working to make Coinbase the best place for you to trade, period. In 2025 we made huge progress with new products, increased access, and deeper liquidity. Excited to take this to the next level in 2026.

Throughout 2025, Coinbase Markets transformed trading access and execution for institutional and active participants worldwide by delivering category-defining products, improving core infrastructure, and enhancing capital efficiency across spot and derivatives offerings.

In U.S. futures, the exchange introduced perpetual-style contracts designed for domestic traders, enabled round-the-clock trading availability, and exceeded $1 billion in open interest during July while supporting 15 contracts across major crypto assets. The platform also debuted its first equities-linked derivatives with Mag7 + Crypto Equity Index Futures, providing combined exposure to crypto and leading equities within a single regulated product.

Separately, the company partnered with Nodal Clear and committed to supporting USDC as eligible collateral in 2026, a move intended to improve efficiency and expand collateral flexibility for derivatives participants.

Beyond the United States, Coinbase International Exchange accelerated growth by broadening product coverage and enhancing trading conditions for global clients. The venue added 100 new perpetual futures to reach 199 total contracts, expanded eligible collateral to 42 assets, and increased maximum leverage limits to 50x. Aggregate open interest across all perpetuals and futures reached a peak of $4.8 billion in October, supported by rising participation and deeper liquidity across venues.

The August acquisition of Deribit further expanded the derivatives footprint, reinforcing leadership in crypto options through open interest surpassing $60 billion and a peak monthly notional volume above $266 billion in October. Spot markets also advanced through next-generation matching technology, FIX 5.0 adoption, cross-margin functionality, expanded lending, and growth beyond 350 tradable assets.

Looking ahead, the company described its forward strategy as follows:

In 2026, Coinbase Markets will continue building a single, seamless, and trusted platform where clients can engage with the full spectrum of trading products. We plan to expand our product suite with new indexes, equities, and emerging assets that traders want, while enhancing liquidity, capital efficiency, and execution across markets.

“Deribit will be further integrated with our platforms to create a truly unified trading experience. By bringing spot, derivatives, and other products together in one cohesive environment, we aim to make trading simpler, more powerful, and more accessible for clients worldwide,” Coinbase noted.
