Ethereum founder Vitalik reflected on social media about the year 2025, noting that Ethereum has overcome the long-standing scalability trilemma in the industry, achieving significant technological breakthroughs. However, the network must choose between chasing speculative trends and fulfilling its original vision as a "neutral world computer."
He emphasized that the technological upgrades in 2025 are not the end, but rather the foundation for resisting the centralized subscription-based internet.
Vitalik declared that the era of the scalability trilemma (the difficulty of balancing decentralization, security, and scalability) has ended, and it has been realized in the actual running code.
The core support comes from two major technological upgrades: the PeerDAS mainnet has been activated, and the ZK-EVM has reached production-level performance, with only security checks remaining.
The integration of these two technologies allows Ethereum to possess decentralization, consensus, and high bandwidth, enhancing network processing capabilities, reducing bottlenecks, and lowering the threshold for individuals to run nodes without sacrificing decentralized design, marking the successful conclusion of a decade-long technological endeavor.
Vitalik positions the upgraded Ethereum as a force against the centralized dilemmas of the modern digital economy, criticizing the current internet tools' reliance on third-party intermediaries' vulnerabilities. He proposed a "no-maintenance testing" benchmark, stating that even if the original developers disappear, Ethereum applications should be able to operate without fraud or censorship.
This requires both the network and upper-layer applications to achieve global availability and true decentralization, eliminating the vulnerabilities of current applications that depend on centralized services.
Vitalik also announced a roadmap before 2030:
In 2026, the gas supply cap will be increased through technical adjustments, and ZK-EVM node operation will be opened;
From 2026 to 2028, gas prices will be readjusted, and payloads will be migrated to the efficient data storage solution "blobs";
From 2027 to 2030, ZK-EVM will become the primary method of block validation, achieving a significant increase in gas limits and completing a fundamental shift from a replication model to a zero-knowledge proof system.
The long-term vision is "distributed modularity," which aims to build power through decentralized blocks, reduce the risks of centralized intervention, and ensure fair access to the network for global users.
Vitalik's statement serves as both a report on technological progress and a philosophical correction: technology has eliminated the engineering excuses for centralization, and the key moving forward is whether society will utilize this power to build a world computer through "no-maintenance testing," rather than indulging in speculative cycles.
