Streaming platform Netflix has announced the release of a new comedy film focusing on a couple trying to remember a password to access millions of dollars in cryptocurrency.
Netflix stated in a Thursday announcement that Hollywood star Jennifer Garner will be one of the leads in the film "One Attempt Remaining." This comedy will tell the story of a divorced couple who discover "the cryptocurrency they won together on a cruise is now worth millions… but they have forgotten the password."
According to What's on Netflix, the plot will include a notice from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, giving the couple 48 hours to retrieve $35 million from the wallet, or the claim will expire.
From the film's title, it seems the story may be a romantic comedy inspired by real cryptocurrency dilemmas, similar to the experience of Stefan Thomas, the former CTO of Ripple, who was locked out of his Bitcoin wallet.
The former cryptocurrency executive forgot the password to his IronKey hard drive, which contained 7,002 Bitcoins—worth about $640 million at the time of writing—deposited in 2011. The hard drive erases data after 10 incorrect attempts. Thomas noted he had tried 8 times, and as of December, he had not publicly stated whether he regained access to the funds.
Although cryptocurrency and blockchain have permeated American culture through films and television over the past 15 years, this technology has rarely been the central focus of feature films.
Some exceptions include the 2020 feature film "Money Plane," the 2022 documentary "Trust No One: The Hunt for the Crypto King" based on the collapse of the QuadrigaCX exchange, and the upcoming "Going Infinite," based on the downfall of cryptocurrency exchange FTX and its former CEO Sam Bankman-Fried.
One of the most famous cases of early cryptocurrency investors losing millions in a hardware wallet is the story of James Howells, a Welsh entrepreneur who reported losing a hard drive containing the private keys to 8,000 Bitcoins.
Howells stated that the hard drive was ultimately discarded in a landfill in the UK in 2013. He has been fighting with the local council for permission to search the site for years, but as of March 2025, he has nearly exhausted all legal avenues to gain access.
