The campaign for the new chairman of the Federal Reserve in the United States has entered the final stretch, with reports suggesting that President Trump will begin interviewing the final candidates for the position this week.

According to the Financial Times on Tuesday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has submitted a list of four names to the White House.

One of them is former Federal Reserve Governor Kevin Warsh, whom Bessent plans to meet on Wednesday. Another is National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett, who is seen as a leading candidate for the position.

The other two will be selected from a list of other finalists, which includes Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller and Michelle Bowman, as well as BlackRock Chief Investment Officer Rick Rieder.

Trump is expected to conduct at least one interview with Bessent next week, with a decision likely to be announced in January.

However, Trump has revealed that he has a specific candidate in mind.

"We will consider several different candidates, but I have a pretty clear idea of who I want," Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on Tuesday.

The upcoming round of interviews indicates that, despite being viewed as a frontrunner, Hassett may not be as secure in his position as previously thought.

Earlier this month, following Trump's comments at the White House on December 2, the odds on Hassett in prediction markets Kalshi and Polymarket surged significantly.

While welcoming guests, Trump referred to Hassett as a "potential Federal Reserve chairman," leading many to believe the president had given a significant hint.

After Trump's comments last week, Hassett's odds soared to 85%, but have since fallen to around 73%; at the time of writing, Warsh's odds on Kalshi were at 13%, fluctuating around that range throughout December.

Regardless of who ultimately takes the chairman position, this change is bound to impact the cryptocurrency market under new leadership.

If elected, despite his close relationship with Trump, Hassett insists that he will remain apolitical in managing the Federal Reserve. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal this week, Hassett stated that when asked if he would blindly follow Trump's directives, "You just have to do the right thing."

"Assuming inflation rises from, say, 2.5% to 4%. You can't lower interest rates," Hassett said, adding that he would rely on his own "judgment, which I think the president trusts."
