According to a study by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), American investors are less inclined to consider purchasing cryptocurrencies than in the past, as risk-taking behavior declines.

The proportion of cryptocurrency investors remained unchanged at 27% between 2021 and 2024; however, the percentage of investors considering increasing their holdings or making their first purchase dropped from 33% in 2021 to 26% in 2024, FINRA reported on Thursday.

The regulatory body found that the group with a "high level of investment risk" decreased by 4 percentage points to 8% from 2021 to 2024. The largest decline was among investors aged 35 and under, which fell by 9 percentage points to 15%.

During periods of heightened optimism in the broader macroeconomic environment, investments in cryptocurrencies typically surge, but uncertainties regarding interest rates, inflation, and the overall economy may prompt investors to shift towards assets considered safer.

FINRA's study was conducted from July to December 2024, involving 2,861 American investors and an online survey covering various states, with a sample of 25,539 adults. The study found that 66% of respondents labeled cryptocurrencies as high-risk investments, up from 58% in 2021.

However, one-third of investors stated that they believe they need to take on significant risks to achieve their financial goals; this figure rises to 50% among those aged 35 and under.

About 13% of investors (including nearly one-third of those under 25) also reported purchasing meme stocks and other popular investments.

Compared to 2021, the pace of new investors entering the market has also slowed. Only 8% of investors indicated that they entered the market in the past two years leading up to 2024, down from 21% in 2021.

FINRA noted, "The 2021 NFCS report indicated a surge in young investors entering the market early in the pandemic; as the pandemic ended, this trend reversed, bringing the proportion of adults aged 35 and under participating in investments back to 2018 levels."

Overall, FINRA believes that the results show a "moderate trend towards a more cautious attitude and behavior" compared to the 2021 survey.
