Cocoon, a decentralized AI network, is a distributed computing platform focused on privacy protection, built on an open network—an independent Layer 1 blockchain associated with the Telegram messaging application—launched on Sunday.
Cocoon allows GPU owners to lease their computing power to the network to process user queries and requests, receiving the native token TON as a reward.
According to Telegram co-founder Pavel Durov, the decentralized AI network has processed its first batch of requests from users, and GPU owners have begun to profit by renting out their hardware. He stated:
Durov announced the launch of Cocoon at the Blockchain Life 2025 conference held in Dubai, UAE, in October, in response to user demand for an AI platform that can protect privacy and data in the face of large centralized AI service providers.
The blockchain community, privacy advocates, and cypherpunks have long warned about the negative social effects of centralized AI, advocating for decentralized AI networks to be viewed as a public good.
David Holtzman, Chief Strategy Officer of the Naoris decentralized security protocol, told Cointelegraph that centralized AI systems give governments and corporations significant influence over individuals, which can undermine user privacy, threaten traditional cybersecurity measures, and lead organized actors to shape society.
He added that these threats can be mitigated by applying blockchain technology to AI to verify information sources, ensure record immutability, and allow nodes in a distributed computing network to communicate in a trustless manner.
In 2024, AI researchers from the Dfinity Foundation (a nonprofit organization promoting the development of the Internet Computer Protocol (ICP)) and executives from decentralized AI developer Onicai jointly proposed seven rules to ensure ethical AI.
These include running AI on permissionless blockchain networks to ensure transparency and data integrity.
A poll conducted by the Digital Currency Group (DCG) in May showed that among 2,036 respondents, 77% indicated that decentralized AI would bring more benefits to society compared to centralized systems.
