Anthropic Hits $350 Billion Valuation, Adding to Fears of an AI Bubble

Just a little over two months ago, AI startup Anthropic, was valued at $183 billion. But now, following the Tuesday announcement of a strategic partnership with two of the world’s largest corporations, software giant Microsoft and AI-focused chipmaker Nvidia, Anthropic’s valuation has ballooned to $350 billion, according to reporting by CNBC.

The deal comes in the wake of mounting concerns over what some see as exceedingly high valuations in the tech sector, giving rise to murmurings of an AI bubble that may burst and wreak havoc at a level last seen in the wake of the dot-com crisis of 2000. The bearish sentiment has been blamed for applying downward pressure on both crypto and stock markets.

“We’re excited to bring our models as a choice to Microsoft Azure,” said Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei. “Anthropic will be the first model that is available on all three of the biggest clouds.”

Microsoft recently reported that it spent $35 billion on AI investments in its first quarter. The firm owns a 27% stake worth $135 billion in OpenAI, Anthropic’s chief rival. It seems Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s CEO, is now hedging his bets by plowing $5 billion into Anthropic, which will also receive a $10 billion investment from Nvidia.

Anthropic itself will commit to purchasing $30 billion worth of compute capacity on Microsoft’s Azure platform, which is powered by Nvidia. Insiders claim the deal assumes a $350 billion valuation for Anthropic, but rather than be seduced by the eyepopping dollar figure, pundits are growing increasingly concerned about an ever-expanding AI bubble.

“When we go through these investment cycles, there are moments we overshoot,” said Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai during a BBC interview. Alphabet is a competitor to Microsoft and recently announced its own deal with Anthropic worth “tens of billions of dollars.” Pichai explained that while AI investment is a fundamentally sound business move, overvaluation is indeed an issue. “There are elements of irrationality,” Pichai said.

Anthropic is a private firm and doesn’t release its financials, but last week, the Wall Street Journal reportedly obtained financial documents showing Anthropic will break even by 2028. For comparison’s sake, the publication also said that OpenAI is expected to lose $74 billion that same year.

  • Why is Anthropic suddenly worth $350 billion?
Its valuation doubled after striking new partnerships with Microsoft and Nvidia.
  • Why are analysts worried?
The soaring valuation adds fuel to fears that an AI bubble is forming.
  • What’s in the deal for each company?
Microsoft is investing $5B, Nvidia $10B, and Anthropic will spend $30B on Azure compute powered by Nvidia chips.
  • How does Anthropic compare financially to rivals?
Leaked documents suggest Anthropic could break even by 2028, while OpenAI is projected to lose $74B that same year.
