U.S. Senator Chris Murphy has criticized the involvement of Coinbase in the construction of a White House ballroom pushed by President Donald Trump.
On social media, Murphy stated that this and previous electoral donations are part of a “corruption factory” that is collecting a reward for having dropped the lawsuit of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) against the exchange in February.
Faryar Shirzad, Chief Policy Officer of Coinbase, labeled these allegations as ridiculous, and explained the legality of all the actions mentioned by Senator Murphy, including the Super PAC donations to Trump’s campaign and the contributions to the inaugural committee.
On the ballroom donation, Shirzad pointed out that Coinbase was “proud” of having supported the initiative, and that other corporations also contributed to this project.
Nonetheless, Murphy insisted the crypto industry had made “extraordinary investments” in Trump that were “unprecedented in American history.”
He stressed:
I know it’s your job to argue this isn’t pay to play, but if this isn’t, what is? I don’t need to hate your industry to think this all stinks.
The involvement of crypto companies in politics and the Trump Administration’s endorsement of the crypto industry has been observed with concern from senators and representatives, who have warned about conflicts of interest as the Trump family has also been involved directly in crypto projects.
