Analyst: "Dinosaur-level" cryptocurrencies will absorb institutional funds flowing into altcoins.

According to Maen Ftouni, CEO of algorithmic trading tool company CoinQuant, older cryptocurrencies that have exchange-traded funds (ETFs) or are expected to obtain ETFs will absorb most of the funds deployed during the next altcoin season.

"Not every coin will have huge returns; liquidity will concentrate in certain places, and of course, dinosaur-level coins are one of them," Ftouni told Cointelegraph at the 2025 Global Blockchain Conference held in Dubai, UAE.

Ftouni stated that institutional funds will flow into "dinosaur-level" coins and attributed the rise of older cryptocurrencies like Ripple (XRP) and Cardano (ADA) in 2024 to this phenomenon. He said:

This prediction comes as market analysts debate the structure and dynamics of the crypto market and how this will affect the arrival of the altcoin season (a period of sustained price increases for altcoins) in the current market cycle.

Over 26 million different crypto tokens are listed on CoinMarketCap—more than double the number of digital assets listed on the site at the beginning of 2025.

"There are too many tokens, and there will be infinitely more in the future; the supply of tokens exceeds demand," said economist and trader Alex Kruger.

Kruger advised traders to adjust their expectations and stated that due to changing dynamics, it is unlikely that there will be an "altcoin season" in the current market cycle, which is a period of sustained price increases for assets.

Instead, traders should expect brief surges in altcoin prices that will only affect selected tokens, lasting only a few weeks each time, Kruger added.
