Telegram co-founder Pavel Durov has unveiled a new decentralized AI network that will be built on The Open Network (TON), an independent layer blockchain associated with Telegram.
Durov announced the Confidential Compute Open Network, or Cocoon, at the Blockchain Life 2025 forum held in Abu Dhabi, UAE. The aim is to allow users to utilize AI-driven features without sacrificing data privacy to centralized AI providers.
According to Durov, users can offer the processing power of their graphics processing units (GPUs) to the network in exchange for TON's native token, Toncoin (TON). Durov also discussed why decentralized AI is crucial for human freedom:
Due to privacy risks and the potential for centralized service providers to review or distort key information in real-time without users' knowledge, decentralized AI models have become a widely discussed topic among AI and blockchain developers.
Several executives in the cryptocurrency and Web3 industries have stated that the centralization of artificial intelligence poses risks to user data privacy, including the risks of data breaches and hacking attacks.
David Holtzman, Chief Strategy Officer of the decentralized security protocol Naoris, told Cointelegraph that storing large amounts of user data on centralized servers makes this data an attractive target for hackers.
Some industry executives have warned that centralized AI service providers may also alter algorithms behind the scenes or distort key data in real-time to manipulate public opinion.
Blockchain technology can help verify that AI-generated data remains tamper-proof by using decentralized ledgers to record the sources and regulatory chains of data, thereby creating immutable and provable digital records on-chain.
