Former U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he pardoned Binance founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ) based on the lobbying and support of "many people" who told him that CZ was innocent.

The pardon for CZ was signed on Wednesday, and Binance confirmed this presidential order in a statement to Cointelegraph.

At a press conference on Thursday, Trump mentioned that he chose to pardon the Binance founder because he "received many recommendations" and garnered significant support, with "people saying he committed no crime."

Changpeng Zhao was sentenced to four months in prison after pleading guilty to a charge of violating the U.S. Bank Secrecy Act for failing to maintain an effective anti-money laundering program at Binance.

CZ's cryptocurrency lawyer, Teresa Goody Guillén, stated on Thursday that the pardon was the right decision, as her client "only had one charge of failing to establish an effective compliance program. No fraud, no victims, no criminal history. No money laundering."

"CZ is the first and only first-time offender in U.S. history to be sentenced to prison for this single, non-fraud-related charge," she said.

After receiving the pardon, CZ expressed his "deep gratitude" on X and stated that he would "do everything we can to help the U.S. become the cryptocurrency capital and advance the global Web3 development."

As part of the plea agreement with authorities, CZ was forced to resign as CEO of Binance and was banned from working at the exchange. The pardon may allow him to rejoin Binance.
