OpenAI has announced the launch of a new AI-driven browser, showcasing how people will use AI agents to browse the web and shop online in the future.

On Tuesday, the company that developed ChatGPT released Atlas. This is a chatbot-based AI browser currently available only to paid users on the macOS platform.

The product includes several features, including a browser memory function that allows ChatGPT to remember the contextual information of websites visited by users. Among these, the AI agent mode stands out.

In Atlas's AI agent mode, the browser can research and analyze information in real-time and automate tasks, allowing users to continue browsing the web. OpenAI stated that Atlas can also automatically open browser tabs for users and complete related tasks.

The agent mode of Atlas integrates a personal assistant directly into the web browser.

Users can automate tasks such as organizing a dinner party, where the AI agent will proactively fetch recipes, search for stores that have the required ingredients, and add items to the shopping cart for delivery.

Atlas has several security measures in place, including prohibiting the execution of code, downloading files, or installing extensions within the browser. The browser cannot access other applications or file systems on the user's computer and will automatically pause operations when visiting sensitive sites such as financial institutions.

The OpenAI browser is one of the first products to showcase the future form of agent AI technology, and blockchain is expected to further enhance its capabilities.

Microsoft's Chief Communications Officer Frank Shaw stated earlier this year, "We have entered the era of agent AI."

"The new vision for the internet is an open network of agents, where AI agents can make decisions and execute tasks on behalf of users or organizations," he pointed out at the time.

Recently, AI agent-driven business models have become a hot topic at the Federal Reserve's Payment Innovation Conference, with ARK Invest's Cathie Wood, Coinbase CFO Alesia Haas, and Google Cloud's strategic head Richard Widmann all praising the advantages of AI agents empowering autonomous payment systems.
