According to reports, Norwegian officials have launched an investigation into the betting on the prediction platform regarding the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize winner María Corina Machado, suspecting potential espionage activities.
According to Bloomberg on Monday, the Norwegian Nobel Institute, which assists the Nobel Committee in selecting Peace Prize winners, has begun investigating reports that bets on the prediction platform Polymarket surged just hours before Machado was announced as the winner.
Kristian Berg Harpviken, the director of the institute, stated that officials are reportedly still investigating whether someone "managed to steal information and profit significantly from it."
Polymarket data shows that a user with the username "dirtycup" made a bet of about $70,000 on Machado and earned over $30,000. Bloomberg reported that three main accounts making similar bets collectively profited about $90,000.
Machado was awarded the Peace Prize for promoting democracy in Venezuela through her work as a human rights activist. In 2024, she praised Bitcoin (BTC) as a "lifeline" during the country's hyperinflation, as some residents used it to "protect wealth and fund their escape."
Launched in 2020, Polymarket has become a platform for many cryptocurrency users to bet on the outcomes of various issues, from the Nobel Prize to bestselling music albums. Last week, the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange, Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), reportedly invested $2 billion in Polymarket ahead of a U.S. release.
The prediction market has recently been targeted by the animated series "South Park," which mocked platforms like Polymarket and Kalshi, as well as the U.S. regulators overseeing them. Ironically, some of the predictions featured in the show ended up being listed on Polymarket.
In September, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) issued a no-action letter for two Polymarket entities. This move allows the platform to offer event contracts without reporting the data typically required by U.S. regulations and without the threat of enforcement.
Polymarket CEO Shayne Coplan stated that the CFTC's action "opened the green light for Polymarket to launch in the U.S." Reportedly, Coplan reached billionaire status last week following the ICE investment.
