Hackers attempted to infiltrate the account of Binance co-founder Zhao Changpeng ("CZ"), an incident that may signal potential attacks from state-sponsored hacker groups such as North Korea's Lazarus Group.
According to a Google warning shared by CZ, "government-backed attackers" are trying to steal Zhao Changpeng's Google password. Zhao pointed out that this could be another infiltration attempt by the North Korean Lazarus Group.
In a post on the X platform on Friday, Zhao stated, "I occasionally receive these warnings from Google. Does anyone know what this is? North Korea's Lazarus organization? But there’s nothing important on my account."
The notorious North Korean Lazarus Group is suspected of being the main orchestrator behind several highly destructive cryptocurrency attacks, including the $1.4 billion Bybit hack, which is the largest in the industry to date, occurring on February 21.
Anndy Lian, a blockchain consultant and writer, told Cointelegraph that a U.S. intelligence report highlights "a complex network of agents impersonating remote IT workers, which has funneled significant funds back to Pyongyang." He added:
"They attempted to contact Google for more information but failed to receive any response for security reasons," he said.
This attempted infiltration comes after North Korean hackers issued threats again. Three weeks ago, Zhao warned that North Korean hackers are increasingly trying to infiltrate cryptocurrency companies through job opportunities and bribery.
In a post on the X platform on September 18, Zhao wrote, "They impersonate job seekers trying to get jobs at your company. This gives them an 'entry opportunity,' especially for positions related to development, security, and finance."
At the same time Zhao issued his warning, an ethical hacking organization called Security Alliance (SEAL) had collected information on at least 60 North Korean agents who were using fake identities to pose as IT workers, attempting to infiltrate U.S. cryptocurrency exchanges and steal sensitive user data.
Coinbase experienced a data breach in May, resulting in the exposure of sensitive information of less than 1% of the exchange's monthly active trading users.
Cointelegraph reported on May 15 that this data breach could lead to compensation costs of up to $400 million for the exchange.
In June, four North Korean agents infiltrated multiple cryptocurrency companies as freelance developers, stealing a total of $900,000 from these startups.
According to Chainalysis data, North Korean hackers stole over $1.34 billion in digital assets through 47 incidents throughout 2024, a 102% increase from the $660 million stolen in 2023.
Cybersecurity experts point out that cryptocurrency companies need to strengthen their security measures against these attackers by implementing dual wallet management and real-time AI threat monitoring.
