The Ethereum Foundation, responsible for overseeing the development of the Ethereum network, has announced the establishment of a "Privacy Cluster," a team of 47 blockchain industry experts tasked with bringing privacy features to a layer of smart contract networks.
According to a Wednesday announcement, the Ethereum Privacy Cluster brings together researchers, engineers, and cryptographers aimed at developing protocol-level privacy features, including private payments and confidential decentralized identity solutions.
The foundation launched the Ethereum Privacy Enhancer (PSE) in September, a research and development initiative focused on privacy, and the Privacy Cluster will work closely with PSE to build enhanced privacy protection features.
These privacy protection developments include creating zero-knowledge infrastructure (a method of verifying information without revealing specific content), facilitating confidential transfers through the PlasmaFold layer two network, and preventing remote procedure call (RPC) nodes from relaying user metadata.
Privacy is at the core of the cypherpunk ethos that underpins cryptocurrency and data encryption, and due to the increasingly sophisticated digital surveillance technologies and their impact on personal freedom, privacy has regained attention within the cryptocurrency community.
As global governments push for more financial surveillance of citizens, and artificial intelligence creates new threats to user privacy, privacy has once again become a focus in the cryptocurrency industry.
The EU's proposed "Chat Control" law is legislation that would allow European governments unrestricted access to all message traffic, potentially driving the adoption of Web3 alternatives as users seek privacy and control over their data.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin urged the cryptocurrency community to "fight against Chat Control," warning of the potential risks of data collection being misused or sensitive user information being leaked through hacking.
"You cannot make society safe by making people unsafe. We all deserve privacy and security, and our private communications should not have inevitable hackable backdoors," Buterin stated.
David Holtzman, Chief Strategy Officer of decentralized security protocol Naoris and a former military intelligence professional, told Cointelegraph that information stored on centralized servers makes it a honeypot for hackers and cybercriminals.
The online communication platform Discord became a target of a hacking attack on Wednesday, with hackers breaching a database storing user age verification photos, including government-issued IDs and passports.
The hackers are attempting to extort the platform, threatening to leak information on an estimated 2.1 million users if their ransom demands are not met.
