Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has called for the widespread adoption of open-source, verifiable infrastructure in key areas such as healthcare, finance, and governance, warning that centralized systems may undermine trust and security.

In a blog post on Wednesday, Buterin pointed out that as digital infrastructure increasingly integrates into daily life, reliance on closed and opaque systems will exacerbate the risks of abuse and monopoly.

Buterin wrote, "The civilizations that benefit the most from the next generation of technology are not the groups that consume technology, but the groups that produce technology." He added that openness and verifiability help guard against global fragmentation.

He envisions a world where a global system is built on verifiable devices. He stated that by default, we are likely to only use digital computing products developed and operated by centralized companies, but we can strive to push for better options.

Buterin noted that proprietary health technologies may limit access channels, create data monopolies, and expose users to surveillance risks. He cited the rollout of COVID-19 vaccines as an example of how closed production and communication systems can weaken public trust. In contrast, he praised projects like PopVax, believing that open processes can reduce costs and diminish skepticism.

The same issues exist in the financial sector. Buterin pointed out that signing a cryptocurrency transfer takes him only 5 seconds, while mailing signed legal documents overseas takes half an hour and costs up to $119. "Cryptowallets and blockchain systems have proven that open, verifiable infrastructure can eliminate inefficiencies," he stated.

He also called for the creation of secure, open hardware and software for critical public systems, including voting. Given that electronic voting machines have been questioned for years, Buterin emphasized that proprietary black-box software cannot establish public trust.

Buterin has been an active advocate for privacy protection. In April of this year, he stated that privacy must be a core design goal, arguing that blind trust in transparency and benevolent leadership is no longer applicable.

Buterin also released a privacy roadmap for Ethereum. In this roadmap, he emphasized the changes needed in the foundational protocols and ecosystem in the short term to ensure better user privacy.
